Your High School Story:

The summer of '62 I went to summer school @ AHS. I hung out @ The Green Grille after classes. I didn't understand that I wouldn't be welcome there during the regular school year! It was so cool! It was the closest thing to "ARNOLD'S" on happy days next to SKIPS of course!!

I only went to AHS my Jr. & Sr. years. Except for a lot of breaking up (it's hard to do) I have only good memories of HS. Here are a few: The BIG GAME at Soldier's Field, Bye Bye Byrdie,Activity Night, Skips, Montrose Beach, Choir, Lunch, I look at my Yearbooks often and think "I wonder what ever happened to?" We were excited to graduate and start our REAL LIVES but we had no idea what we were facing. If I could do it over, knowing what I know now, would I ? Not on your life.

Did you have a nickname in school? If so, what was it?

What were you in High School?

Singer/Band Member

Agnes Okner... she allowed me to create and did not judge my art.

Vlasta Vedra - I learned a lot of practical life skills in Home Ec.

Gracias Senor Gianetti

Robert Michaels "He was sooooooooo cute"

Betsy Zapantis.. taught me the Bosa Nova at Activity Night.

Peter Katsiogiannis - he passed me in Chemistry which was a requirement for Nursing school

What teacher/s did you dislike and why?

Some football voach who chastised me at activity night for dresiing like a guy. I was wearing a pink sweatsuit. Loose sweatshirt, tight pants. I had one in gray too !

Social Planning, Prom

What is your favorite memory or memories of AHS?

Where do I start? I LOVED HIGH SCHOOL

What Elementary School did you attend?

Sumner K-7B Chicago IL May 7A-8A CHicago IL

Your Elementary School Story:

I loved Sumner. I fell down in the mud in theEisenhowerr Expressway construction site on my way to Kindergarten. I remember the Copenhagen Tobacco sign that we could see from the school yard and the wondeful smell of the drying tobacco leaves.

The gravel schoolyard, ruining my shoes digging hopscotch games with my heels. Boys playing a handball game called "Pinners"

Everyone's fear of the school nurse Mrs. Matzen who would scrub your wounds with a brush to get the gravel out before applying iodine and a Band Aid!!! OUCH

Red Feather Day, Tissue Paper Shamrock Day, Taffy Apple Sales. Clean Up Week (Spring Vacation) Halloween Parade, making Valentines maiboxes & cards!! Larning to read.

How wonderful and accepting the kids were when we kids from "The other side of the track" were transferred. The adults, were not so welcoming-- someof the PTA (parents) met us on the steps the first day with arms folded to block our entrance.

As it says in "South Pacific" You have to be taught before it's too late- to hate all the people your relatives hate- you have to be carfefully taught!

Melody, Happy birthday. I guess I was so busy celebrating my own birthday I didn't know yours was so close. My 8th grade year @ May School was wonderful because of girls like you. A bunch of us from "The wrong side of the tracks" were transferred to May School I had been at Sumner School K-7the grade. Not everyone at May was happy about this transfer. There were a few Hispanics and some hillbillies. The PTA and some of the teachers made it very difficult for us students. The kids welcomed us with open arms. Well, the girls welcomed me for sure. I remember we had a gift exchange for Christmas in MIss DiMaggio's class. Manuel ??? GOt Barb Kaplan's name. He gave her a heart to wear around herneck with his name engraved on it. She received it politely but boy did we hear about it after school. I went to a Christmas party @ Manuel's house. Some guy, maybe Eric Grebinger had broken up with me. I remember his momma holding me as I cried. In her broken english she said Something like "Oh nina ( little one) you are so jung. There will be many boy friends in your life. This is sad for you but not the end of the world. She was right my heart has been broken many times. Not just by males but by my own children. Our son likes to say, "It will all work out in the end. And if it doesn't work out it's not the end ! " Thank you for being my friend in those wonderful silly giggly adolescent years. I am now crying cleansing nostalgic tears. I hate being in my 70's but I'm not done living yet.

Top O' the Mornin' to ya' Allan ! When you were a little boy did anyone tell you the Chicago River turned green just because it was your birthday ? The attached is our lovely daughter Gretchen. She turned 43 last October. She is 5' tall and weighs 100 pounds. The Yoga pose was her being silly. She is a college grad but last year, ago asked if I knew that Buddah was once a living human being. UH DUH YEAH ! I guess too much protestant indoctrination in her youth. She and her dad have absolutely NO sense of rhythm. THus she can't dance. Her brother played percussion in High School. He learned to read music. I joked that he had a solo in every concert. At the end of the Star Spangled Banner, the symbols always clanged. Oh, yeah hope your birthday was Jolly ! I'm guessing it is your 71st. Did you do summer school to graduate with the class of '64 ?

Hello former boyfriend. I see that in 2 days it will be your birthday. Our only son turns 46 today. I have been texting him the hour by hour details of his birth/delivery ! It's not graphic, I had a scheduled C. Section. Kaiserschnitz in German !!! Yesterday the hubby & I rang the bell @ a grocery store for the Salvation Army ! At one point Navy guy walked by the bucket. I said "Merry Christmas Sailor !!!" He was wearing something that said NAVY ! He was in active duty during Desert Storm on a Nuclear Submarine. Mike my hubby was eligible but was never drafted. The hubs lost a good buddy when the Scorpion was lost somewhere near the Azores. The navy guy & Mike talked for over an hour. I smiled, rang the bell and wished everyone a Happy Christmas. The Salvation Army guy came twice during our watch to empty the bucket ! We were there from 5 to 8 pm. Inside the automatic door area !! As Winnie the Pooh would say "Hapy Pappy BUthdah Huthdah ! He got Owl to help him spell ! I just mailed the Pearl necklace you gave me to our daughter in Austin TX. She is an artisan & refurbs all kinds of stuff ! She turned 43 in October. I'm thining this is your 71st am I close ? Happy Birthday Fella'

ESTHER, I used the reply cards from my wedding to copy Mom's recipe's . Just came across the one from your parents. They wrote Mr & Mrs Armand (SP?) Brodsky will be delighted to attend. Next Saturday will be 50 years fo MIke & I. I have used your folks idea on every wedding response I have ever sent. That was such a wonderful, delightful, personal touch. Thinking of you and the fun of our youth.

Hello Eileen, Did you do children's theatre @ Columbus Park in Chicago? If so, we did the Tea Party from "Alice in Wonderland. " If so, I was the Mad Hatter you were perhaps the Doormouse or Alice . I believe Mr. Schmidt was the director. Now I have to check out Harold Crane. I graduated June' 64. Only 1 years months @ AHS but they were great for me. I live near Cleveland Ohio. Last year I was rooting for the Cubs. They may play the Indians again this year in the series. Met my husband in 1965 2 block from Wrigley Field. Neither of us has ever seen a live Cubs game.

Mr. Potempa,
a.k.a. Bob
Your name just popped up on my computer. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Old Fella'.

My husband Michael is 70. He managed to avoid the draft in the VietNam "CONFLICT." He was not a draft dodger. He happened to work for G.D. Searle. At one point in our lives Donald Rumsfeld was a big shot @ Searle.

Math was never my best subject, I figure you have 47 year old son. Hiopoe you get to spend time with him.

My husband is currrently: patriotic, opinionated, a Christian a, Republican and a mega conservsative. In the 50 years I have known him all of those things have changed many times.
In the MANY years I have known and loved MIchael Grimm. all of those things have changed. MANY TIMES.

July 8th, 2017 we will have been married 50 years.

I was recently asked the secret of our success. Men & women,of "COLOR." RED,YELLOW,BLACK WHITE. All are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world. I told these people male, female, homo, hetero, trans --- . THe same an older gentleman told me. I was 20 years old. A student nurse @ IL Masonic Hospital.
He noticed the "ROCK" on my left hand. He said;"young lady, I see you are engaged. May I ask you one question ? Do you think that marriage should be 50/50?" I answered "Darn straight I do."He said "If that's your final answer, you are too young to get married.
I said what do YOU think is the answer? 70/30." Still the feisty little blonde, raised by Jack & Ruth Thornburg I said; "Oh yeah ! Who gets 70 & who gives 30?"

He said, "I won't tell you the answer. You will have to figure it out for yourself. It has taken me over 50 years to figure out the answer. " We are still working on it. OUR SECRET ? Dang hard back-breaking work from both sides. The queston "WHY" can be answered with one of three words. LOVE, POWER OR MONEY !! Think about it !

My husband found a photo of my Daddy Jack in our barn. Dad was in a tent., wrapped in an old Army blanket. Lots of Badges, Medals, etc. on the blanky. He was heavy, youngish, weilding a large axe. Dad loved to camp. Oops 2:45 E.P.T. Better get moving.
Here is a fun quiz for you to take in your spare time ! GIve the code words using the American Alphabet. A=Alpha. B=Beta C+ Charlie etc. my real e-mail is Send me a message there when you get 100% Marilynn R. Thornburg Grimm Class of '64.
